book lovers: stop being dicks

Been quieter online the last week but louder IRL because bronchitis. Yep.

Also, there’s emoji in WordPress now: 1f637-twitter

The third episode of Game of Thrones Season 5 is tonight, and with that in mind I’d like to let out a rant I’ve been holding in for five seasons.

Are you a book lover? Awesome. But that doesn’t give you license to treat non-readers like imbeciles because you wanna make yourself feel holier than thou.

Woah, that feels good to get out.

Some background to this statement:

Last season someone posted a spoiler on Facebook the same evening of the show. I hadn’t had a chance to watch it yet, so I was spoiled. I commented, “Spoilers!!” hoping the person would edit or delete the post to save others the misery of being spoiled.

Nope. Someone else commented something along the lines of, “Well maybe if you’d read the books!”

I’d unsubscribed from the post’s notifications and closed down the computer, feeling QUITE ENOUGH OF THAT for one day, thank you very much.

Sure, you’re allowed to post mostly anything on your own social media accounts. But does that mean you should? Most people will agree with me the answer’s NO.

Look guys, I’m a book lover, which is obvious from taking a longer look at my blog or a fast look at my Goodreads account. I just don’t read George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series because I don’t like Martin’s writing style. I love the story he’s telling but I hate the way he tells it. With that being said, watching the TV show gets me the awesome plot and characters without the loquaciousness of Martin’s prose.

But I didn’t tell the commenter that, because it’s not really the point. So what if I had actually read some of the series? Would the person go, “My bad. I thought you were one of those TERRIBLE PEOPLE who doesn’t read”? I’d have blown a gasket.

You’re not a better person because you sit on your hiney with a book in your hands while someone else sits on their hiney with their eyes on a screen. You’re both indolent and escaping into imaginary lands.

So stop being dicks to each other. There’s no reason to other than the fact that it makes you feel falsely superior to someone else.

And as far as posting spoilers go… just, why? Are you going to explode if you don’t get your opinion on that death out there? The answer’s no, you’re not gonna explode. So you wanna post it anyway? Then do the courteous thing and go:

So, what’d you guys think of THAT DEATH?”

It’s really not that hard to allow someone else to scroll past your banter without clicking read more. Okay, you’d rather post whatever you want however you want to whenever you want to? That’s your right. It’s also my right to unfollow you completely.

Sorry, not sorry.
